WordPower
There are 3 versions of text-based WordPower, communication software designed for people with literacy skills. These are WordPower 45 and 84, available for Vanguard, Vantage and Liberator 14 communication aids, and WordPower 144 written exclusively for the Liberator 14. For people needing more pictorial support, please ask for a demonstration of Picture WordPower and the other picture based programmes covered in the Language section.
What is WordPower?
- A language program that has
- A QWERTY spelling keyboard
- A customized word prediction dictionary
- One keystroke access to many frequently-used words.
- Customizable dynamic rows where you can add names, photos, and messages specific to you.
Who can use WordPower?
- WordPower requires literacy skills.
- Picture WordPower may be used by language learners who are not fully literate; however, it requires some reading and spelling skills.
People who need to use a powerful voice output device without much learning time may want to consider WordPower as one of their primary options.
How do Unity and WordPower compare?
- Because WordPower is based on quick access to a small number of the most frequently used words, simple statements can be very powerful and quick.
- "I can say anything to anybody, anytime." takes 11 keystrokes using WordPower for Pathfinder.
- The same sentence takes 12 keystrokes using Unity 128.
- Unity, however, allows quick access to more complex words and phrases without requiring spelling.
- For beginners, WordPower does require more literacy skills, for example, to say the word "drive" you have to know that drive is an action word, you must then navigate to the action words page, then select the word "drive" from a page of other action words. With Unity you remember that Mr. Action Man can "drive" a truck. You select the truck icon, then add the verb ending, which is Mr. Action Man.
- On changing to WordPower after beginning Unity: "This could really stall a child's education progress if he were needlessly switched from Unity to WordPower as soon as he could read. Once a student is familiar with Unity It can continue to be an efficient method of communicating throughout their life." - Robin Hurd, mother of twins who use Pathfinders.
