Fast retrieval of stored vocabulary

So, for communication, Discovery combines all the advantages of Minspeak and page based systems.  The static keyboard helps users develop motor patterns that aid fastest access to the most frequently used words. One of Discovery's real strengths is the ability to build sentences to speak independently at a rate constrained only by the ability of the user, and not by the limitations of the system.

Discovery uses a set of simple rules that maintain programming logic, integrity and consistency. There are clear pointers that make it easy to see where the words are stored. All parts of speech (including verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and nouns) are programmed using the same logical and consistent approach.

Flexibility of expression

Hundreds of categories contain topic-specific vocabulary, almost all of which is represented by actual images of the word stored, and virtually all is accessible in only 2 key selections. Access vocabulary typically not found in AAC systems and talk about history and geography, religion, the arts, maths and science.

The symbols are crisp, clear, new colour images drawn exclusively for Discovery.

Using Discovery is easy!

Once you have mastered just a few simple rules, communicating with Discovery is easy:

1. You select a Category symbol first, then the Word
2. Sometimes you select a 3^rd symbol between the Category and the Word (e.g. for opposites or perhaps a sub-category)
3. Very occasionally, for some infrequently used words, you may also select a 4^th symbol for a sub-sub-category!

Colour coding helps you find vocabulary and pages links more easily:

• Blue                 Function keys
• Green              Verb structure icons
• Orange            Displaced words
• Purple              Select the word, keeping the page open
• Pink                 Moves you to the selected page
• Black               Alphabet keys
• White               Speak the selected word and return to home page!

How does Discovery compare with other AAC systems?

Of the top approx. 500 most frequently used words, 94% are accessed in 2 key activations and 99% within 3 key activations! However, shortcuts and quick hits bring the average key selection below this. 

The number of vocabulary items stored in each software programme in Liberator 14 is:

These figures are for stored words or phrases, excluding plurals (which would nearly double the number of stored words)

More than 10,000 words in Discovery are accessed in just 2 key selections and a further 55,000 words take 3 key selections. The remainder tend to be low frequency words, e.g. to select 'horse' takes 2 key selections (Animals/horse) but 'colt' requires 4 key selections (Animals/baby/male/horse).
