Teach & Talk! is a package of communication software, with activity-based lesson plans, that helps you teach communicative behaviours, develop early communication skills and introduce language to students working from level P2(2) through to P5. It is available for the SpringBoard and SpringBoard Lite communication aids.

   is used within a total communication policy as a whole class resource or, as they progress, an individual’s own communication aid.  Activity-based lesson plans are set out in small, easy steps, and include many useful teaching and clinical tips.  The levels are linked to commonly used UK language descriptors, including Derbyshire Language Scheme, P Levels (the main link), PIVATS and Scope's AAC Curriculum "Supporting Communication through AAC":

 

A key focus of this fantastic resource is to help you assess the level of your students … and then measure their communication success!  There are PCS and LLL (Language, Learning and Living) versions of Teach & Talk!  PRC’s free Application Support Software (PASS) allows you to customise the programme on your PC and transfer data between the PC and the SpringBoard communication aid.

P2(2) / Derbyshire early vocabulary 5-9 months stage / Milestone 2(b)

The activities in each 'P' level will encourage the acquisition of some of the descriptors in that level - e.g. students are not expected to be already achieving at level P2(2) when they begin working on P2(2) activities.

In P2(2) the emphasis is on motivating students to make choices using the SpringBoard.  Lessons focus on turn taking and choice making activities in snack time, music and other sessions across the school.

We used familiar routines to support learning at this level.  Categorising word types with some high frequency core vocabulary continues at this level, including further developing social vocabulary, and introduction of adjectives and more pronoun-verb combinations.

P5 / Derbyshire early vocabulary 9-18 months / Milestone 5

This carefully structured language programme is designed to further develop basic communication skills - it opens with just one symbol showing and it is not expected that all students will learn the full 15 key location programme contained in the lessons.  For those that do though, a 32 key programme is available, and some students may progress to the 45 key location programmes on Vantage or Vanguard communication aids.

The P5 programme contains high frequency core vocabulary, including frequently used nouns, numbers, letters, shapes and other priority words. There is also a useful selection of pre-stored sentences and questions.
